Well, if we aren't making any money off of it and we give credit where credit is due, isn't copyright not really an issue? Heck, we're technically breaking copyright by having this project in the first place. Of course, this could just be me being naively silly about how all this stuff works.

I think that applies to most of us, which is why some people have lawyers, accountants, and all of those other paid people that actually know what's going on.

That would be a job for Creative Commons, if any of y'all listen to The Signal (Serenity/Firefly podcast) then you'll know they use music from several shows and especially Serenity and Firefly. You just have to give credit to the original artist/writer then its okay. Think about the discalmer for VF...I'vegot a bit of knowledge when it comes to creative commons.
Here is the technicals from the Creative Commons site:

The Creative Commons licenses enable people to easily change their copyright terms from the default of “all rights reserved” to “some rights reserved.”
